THANK YOU, MOM!
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
Recently, I was able to see my mother when I traveled out of state to officiate the funeral of a family member. She looked different. Her hair had more white strands, there were more fine wrinkles on her face, and she seemed to walk a little bit slower. But I love my mom and carry her image in my mind on my heart every day. We talk on the phone almost daily. And as I began to think about Mother’s Day approaching, I can’t help but remember how good God has been to me. Some people never get to meet their mothers, others have few happy memories, and still others get little time with them. My mother changed my destiny and that of my entire family.
My mother grew up with my grandma and her three other siblings in a poor Texas town. Her father showed up occasionally when he was running from the law. My mom’s parents had divorced when she was just a few years old. Grandpa was a drug user and sold them too and was murdered when she was a teenager in high school. But my mom had decided to follow Jesus as a young girl at a local Baptist church. In fact, my mom was the one who took my father to church and he is now a pastor. Mom’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope”. She changed the direction of our lives because she believed that God’s plans are better than man’s plans. Thank you, mom!
