Would You Like to Get Well?

“Jesus told him, ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!'”  John 5:8 (NLT)

Jesus was returning to Jerusalem for one of the pilgrimage feasts, either Booths, Passover, or Pentecost.  He immediately goes to a certain area in the city where there were a lot of sick people – blind, lame, and paralyzed.  He then approaches a man who had been laying on the ground for thirty-eight years and asks him, “Would you like to get well?”  At first thought, this may seem extremely insensitive except that these very words are being spoken by the Son of Man.  Imagine you or I visiting a hospital and asking random patients, “Want to get better?”  It would seem pretty outrageous to do that.  But notice how the man does not even know who Jesus is as he responds in verse seven: “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”  Apparently an angel would stir the waters of a nearby pool and whoever stepped in first was healed.  This man was stuck in his condition.

I wonder if there are times in our own lives where we can get stuck in the same place, year after year, or left behind because of our lack of awareness, appreciation, or failing to ask for help?  Or maybe we push good people away who could have otherwise helped us move forward.  The man who had been destined to lay on the ground for thirty-eight years plus had no one; no family or friends.  But Jesus knows his condition and talks with him.  Did this man bring on his physical ailment himself?  Possibly, but what we do know is that Jesus responds to him and says in verse eight: “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!  And then something amazing happens in verse nine: “Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking!”  No faith is required and Jesus heals him!  Why?  Because Jesus doesn’t need man’s small faith to do great things.  His words are enough and have the power to create, build, form, and heal!  I believe that God wants us to get out of our own way so that we can “stand up pick up our mat, and walk” forward with the hope of Jesus Christ.  If the Son of Man can give an unknown lame stranger a second chance at life, why couldn’t he do that for you?  He certainly can!  Stand up for Jesus in your home, at your work, and as you move forward everyday.

Would you be open to continue partnering with me as we transform Oceanside with the love of Jesus Christ this year? Or how about meeting up to grab a coffee or share a meal?  “LIVE with Basilio!” sessions will be returning on Wednesday, September 15th, at 4pm.  This is for everyone!
